The National Academy of Engineering recently began a year-long project to gather input regarding the biggest engineering challenges and opportunities of this century. They have a new site called “Grand Challenges for Engineering”, which provides numerous opportunities for you to add your comments and feedback. There are also essays on educating engineers for the 21st Century, engineering in the developing world, and the challenges of landing on Mars. The Grand Challenges committee is made up of a number of well-known engineers, inventors, and science writers. They plan to announce their findings in September 2007. Please check it out, tell your students about this site, discuss it, and send them your comments and ideas.
