The National Academy of Engineering published an online book last year entitled: Educating the Engineer of 2020 : Adapting Engineering Education to the New Century. This book appears to have come out of the same realizations that drove the ABET, Inc. to revise the accreditation standards for engineering and applied sciences colleges. It discusses the need for engineers to know how to work collaboratively with other engineerings in a globalized economy. It mentions the need to make engineering curricula more meaningful for undergraduates, particularly for underrepresented minorities such as women.
Although some of the recommendations might be a bit controversial (such as the one suggesting that the B.S. degree be considered a “pre-engineering” degree), most of the recommendations are being taken seriously by engineering educators. This book maps out what very well could be the pathway that engineering education takes over the next ten or so years.
