Laughing and Crying – Thomas Friedman

This from the Wednesday, May 23, 2007 column by New York Times columnist Thomas L. Friedman.  His column “Laughing and Crying” discusses how he feels that the U.S. needs to grant all foreign-born students who earn science and technology PhD’s here instant citizenship, to encourage them to stay here, get jobs, and start companies.  He makes a very important point, especially given how it seems as if most of our engineering graduate students are foreign-born.  As a rebuttal to immigration nay-sayers who don’t want more immigrants here, he says “but they will, over time, start many more companies and create many more good jobs than they would possibly displace.”  Here, here!!  In his article, Friedman does, however, keep making the rather unsupported point that somehow letting these students go back to their home countries will “affect our standard of living”, which I think is rather a stretch.  But otherwise, this is an excellent article.  You can read it in your library’s online version of the New York Times, or pay to get it online via NY Times Select Archive.
