Ch-Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes
The “cultural issue of change” (to quote Dr. Sheri D. Sheppard at Stanford University”) in engineering education is the subject of a recent article in the Chronicle of Higher Education (January 30, 2009). In “Engineering Schools Prove Slow to Change” By Paul Basken, engineering colleges are taken to task for being resistant to the changes needed to attract bright young minds (particularly female and under-represented minorities) and keep engineering education relevant in a changing professional world. The resistance of faculty to changes in teaching methods and curricula, as well as a continuing inability to show young people how engineering can matter, are among the issues discussed in this brief article.
You can read this article either online at the link above (if your institution has a subscription) or in the print edition January 30, 2009, Page A4.
